In forests on moister slopes and near streams throughout the eastern ranges. Sensitive to drought.In cultivation they are generally hardy and appreciate good drainage and full sun to part shade.

General Notes

Fast growing. Important in maintaining stream bank stability. Small insectivorous birds (e.g. wrens) nest in the foliage. The flowers provide food for insects.
