Flowerhead dense, silky and cylindrical, up to 20cm long. When flowering, the stigmas are purple or brownish, and the yellow anthers are prominent.

Perennial grass with long, thick rhizomes, and smooth stems, either erect or bent abruptly. Leaves are flat or slightly inrolled, and finely ribbed on both surfaces.
