Widespread in open forest from sea-level to sub-alpine often in swampy situations. Locally frequent in wet sandy and grassy places on the central plateau.

Does not like to dry out although it can be successfully grown in a partially protected situation. Suitable below powerlines. 

Collection is difficult as only a small amount of seed is ripe at any one time. seed is a tanbrown and releases easily from the small seed heads when ripe. collect heads, dry and extract unreleased seed by hand
