Twining Fringe-lily

Bears many solitary, purple flowers with fringed flower petals.

Lily with long, thin, spirally twining stem and very few leaves.

Heaths and open woodland, coastal near sea level, and inland to 1000m a.s.l., in the North East, Midlands and East Coast. 

 

Hardy 

 

Propagate from seed. Likes a well-drained, sunny position where the stem can be supported by rocks or other plants. A cluster of edible white, watery tubers is found at the base of the lily stem, which Aboriginal people in Victoria probably would have cooked before eating. Suitable below powerlines. 

Each capsule contains 4-6 more or less spherical seeds, 1.5mm in diameter, which changes from creamy-green to black when mature. Can be difficult to collect sufficient seed as individuals do not produce large quantities of seed and are scattered in distribution. Sow within 6 months of seed collection.
