Widespread and abundant from near seal-level to alpine, in rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest, fern gullies and alpine shrubberies. It grows in soil, on rock, and on the limbs and trunks of a range of tree species. In alpine regions, often in boulder grottos near running water. Replaces H. cupressiforme at higher altitudes.
