Common at most altitudes but less so in the shady understorey of the denser forests. Particularly prominent after fires.

Can be very invasive in the well-watered conditions of a suburban garden. Flowering time depends on altitude - spring at lower altitudes, summer higher up. Suitable below powerlines. 

Fruit, an achene with pappus bristles slender, minutely hooked. when seed is mature achenes loosen in centre of the seedhead which appears fluffy. collect entire seedheads in paper bags and allow to dry

Sieve to clean seed .Seedheads are prone to insect attack and should be dusted with an insecticide. Most species have a two month dormancy. Surface sow. Seed easily collected and germinated.
