Male flowers in clusters near the top of the branch; female flowers in clusters in the leaf axils. Flowers are small and pale green, 2mm wide.

Sprawling herb that branches from the base, with thin, narrow, coarsely toothed leaves which are hairless on the upper surface and scaly or flaky on the undersurface, 1.5-3cm long.

Seed can be sown while still in the fruit, as long as the fruits are rubbed under running water for several minutes or soaked in water for eight hours, and the water changes 2 or 3 times. This removes the salt which inhibits germination.
