Long-leaved Caladenia (orchid)

 

0.12m - 0.24m (12-24cm) 

Flowers 1-2, dull white internally, greenish with red bands and densley hairy externally, labellum pink with narrow dark red transverse bars, apex pale yellow, calli white, basal calli yellow, column greenish with red transverse bars. 

Papery capsule 

Leaf linear, dark green, red base, sparsley hairy. Scape relatively stout, sparsley hairy. 

 

Coastal Vegetation; Dry Eucalypt Forest and Woodland 

On Flindrs Is recorded as growing in detritus on a boulder. In Victoria and South Aust. found in open forest and light coastal scrub.

Tender 

Clay; Loam; Sandy; Well-drained 

Maybe intolerant of high fire frequency. Not well reserved. Suitable below powerlines. 

 

Standard 

 

 

Orchid seeds are very minute yellow, brown or blackish dust-like particles. Orchid seeds are produced within a capsule that splits at maturity and releases tousands to millions of seeds. Dispersed by wind and water and only germinate following infection of the embryo by a suitable mycorrhizal fungus. Very few seeds become mature plants.
