Common in rocky places, especially moss- covered rocky ledges liable to dry out in summer. Also on sand dunes. Often found growing in a group of similar plants. Common in damp sandy soils under light forest cover, sea level to c.250m, north west, north east, Midlands and east coast.

Plants can be shortlived but they regenerate readily from seed. Suitable below powerlines. 

Fruit a globular capsule c 5mm in diameter.capsules turn brown and brittle when mature and mature seed is angular and dark brown or black

Seed has 2-3 months dormancy but gives good results after this. May be useful for direct seeding. Sow in Autumn. For some species seed over 12 months old may require stratification for 6-7 weeks. Temp. may be critical to germination ie. not above18oC.
